The collective behind the album Maliq & d'Essentials first took shape in Indonesia on May 15, 2002, when eight creatives came together to launch a group centered on a self-defined approach to sound they called Organic Music. The name MALIQ, the core of the project’s full identity, is an acronym for Music And Live Instrument Quality, a founding concept created by brothers Angga and Widi Puradiredja, who served as the creative and operational backbone of the group from its earliest days. Angga stepped into the role of the group’s vocalist, while Widi took on drumming duties, and both brothers expanded their creative portfolios to fill every key behind-the-scenes role for the group, working as producer, composer, and arranger for all of the project’s output, ensuring that the original ethos that brought the eight founding members together never wavered as the group grew and evolved.
