Assembled on the British singing competition The X Factor in 2010, the English-Irish pop boy band that would grow to become one of the best-selling boy bands of all time brought together five solo hopefuls: Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, and Zayn Malik, who remained part of the group until his departure in 2015. From their earliest days, the group built an unprecedented commercial footprint, first breaking long-standing chart records with their 2011 debut single “What Makes You Beautiful,” which topped rankings across the UK, US, and multiple other global markets. Their debut studio album, Up All Night, released the same year, made them the first British act to land at number one on the Billboard 200 with their first LP, a feat that preceded an even more historic run that saw them become the first band in history to have their first four studio albums debut atop the same Billboard 200 chart.
