The album *Stephen Schwartz* presents a collection of pop music from the Philippines. This recording is titled after the composer, who has a background rooted in musical theatre and film. His career began with studies in piano and composition at Juilliard during high school, followed by a drama degree from Carnegie Mellon University in 1968, where he also penned several student-produced musical shows. Shortly after graduating, he joined RCA Records as a producer and A&R man. During his two-year tenure at RCA, he achieved his first significant success with the title song for the play *Butterflies Are Free*. Following his departure from RCA, he was invited to contribute music and new lyrics to *Godspell*, which became a massive hit in 1971 and earned him two Grammy Awards. Later that year, he wrote lyrics for Leonard Bernstein's *Mass*.
