Those stories didn’t shy away from the community’s deepest losses, either, honoring the lives cut short by systemic unemployment and the national mental health crisis that left too many loved ones grieving people the mainstream media had long ignored. That first project’s unflinching, empathetic gaze turned exclusively outward, framing every character with the kind of nuance that comes from living alongside the people you write about, turning ordinary, unremarkable lives into material that resonated with audiences far beyond the small coastal town that spawned it.
