For decades, mainstream global narratives of pop’s cultural impact centered only a small handful of regional industries, framing most national pop ecosystems outside of Western markets and a handful of better-documented East Asian creative hubs as niche, secondary, or only recently worthy of international attention. This widespread erasure overlooks the decades of sustained, vibrant creativity that has defined pop scenes across Southeast Asia, none more robust or far-reaching than the pop industry rooted in Indonesia, a country whose hundreds of millions of listeners have long supported a domestic creative economy that turns out innovative, resonant work that resonates far beyond the archipelago’s borders.
