The brainchild of brothers Angga and Widi Puradiredja, who set out to build a project centered on intentional, live-first musical creation, MALIQ & D'Essentials first took shape on May 15, 2002, when the pair launched their collective with eight initial personnel members, crafting a unique framework for their work that they dubbed Organic Music. The name MALIQ itself was born from that core mission, an acronym for Music And Live Instrument Quality that anchored every creative choice the group would make, from their writing and recording processes to their approach to assembling their full lineup, which found its final form with the addition of Indah on vocals, Jawa on bass, Lale on guitars, and Ilman on keys, with Angga stepping into the role of the group’s vocalist, while Widi handled drums, in addition to both brothers taking on core creative roles as producers, composers, and arrangers for every project the group released.
