The foundational idea for MALIQ & D'Essentials took root on May 15, 2002, when brothers Angga and Widi Puradiredja set out to build a musical collective centered on a sound they called Organic Music, a framework rooted in intentional, hands-on musicianship that would distinguish every project the group created. The name they chose for their core identity, MALIQ, was never a random choice, but an acronym that encapsulated the exact values that drove their work: Music And Live Instrument Quality, a promise that every recording they released would center the texture and authenticity of played instruments, rather than leaning on generic or prefabricated sounds to fill out their work. What began as a small brainchild between the two brothers quickly grew as they began to add other talented musicians to their lineup, turning a two-person vision into a full 8-person ensemble that could bring every layer of their creative ideas to life.
