Hip-hop’s global journey is one of constant reclamation and reimagination, a genre that originated in specific Black and Latinx communities in the Bronx but has spread to every corner of the world, adapting to the linguistic, social, and cultural realities of every place it lands, never remaining a static import but always growing into something that belongs first and foremost to the local artists who shape it. Across Southeast Asia, hip-hop has carved out a particularly resonant space, with national scenes across the region developing their own signatures, their own ties to local cultural traditions, their own ways of channeling the genre’s core ethos of storytelling and collective representation into work that speaks directly to the experiences of people in their home countries.
