The practice of recording and circulating live DJ sets emerged from a widespread desire to preserve the ephemeral, unreplicable magic of in-person performances, which had long been confined to the small, temporary spaces where they unfolded, accessible only to the small group of attendees lucky enough to be present for the night of the show. In Indonesia, this practice took root early in the development of the country’s wider DJ culture, as local practitioners and audiences alike recognized the unique artistic value of the live sets that had become a cornerstone of communal gatherings across the archipelago. In the earliest days of Indonesian DJ culture, these live performances were largely limited to small underground events in major urban centers, where a tight-knit community of enthusiasts would follow DJs from venue to venue, never expecting to be able to relive the energy of a set once the last track faded and the crowd dispersed.
