Indonesia’s sprawling archipelago, made up of more than 17,000 islands that are home to hundreds of distinct ethnic groups, each with their own centuries-old artistic practices, languages, and modes of creative expression, has long nurtured a musical ecosystem defined by cross-pollination, collaboration, and the blurring of boundaries that might separate forms in more rigidly categorized creative industries. Across the country’s major urban centers and smaller rural communities, creators draw from the full scope of sonic heritage available to them, weaving together traditions that might originate on opposite sides of the archipelago, as well as engaging with global creative currents that travel to Indonesia’s shores through trade, migration, and digital exchange, resulting in a vast body of work that resists simple, singular genre labels.
