About This Album
Rooted in the sprawling, interconnected creative ecosystems of Indonesia’s archipelagos, the album Allahu sits within a lineage of cross-cultural sonic experimentation that defines the country’s Music/Mix classification, a category that rejects rigid genre boundaries to hold space for the wide range of creative expression that emerges from a nation made up of more than 17,000 islands, home to hundreds of distinct ethnic groups, each with their own longstanding musical traditions that have been interwoven, reimagined, and shared across generations and geographic divides. The Music/Mix classification itself was developed to center work that defies the narrow silos often imposed on recorded music, work that cannot be reduced to a single regional style or global popular genre, work that pulls from multiple traditions to create something that exists outside pre-existing, industry-made categories.
