The Fray, an American rock band formed in Denver, Colorado, in 2002, delivers their rock, alternative rock, and pop rock sound on "How to Save a Life." Founding members Isaac Slade and Joe King met at a Denver music store, and critics have often compared the band's piano-driven style to that of Coldplay and Keane. The Fray lists Counting Crows, Better Than Ezra, and U2 as influences. Lead singer Isaac Slade wrote "How to Save a Life" based on his experience mentoring a troubled teenager, with the lyrics lamenting an inability to help a friend. This track became the band's most successful single, peaking at number three on the Billboard Hot 100 and reaching number one in Ireland, Spain, and Canada. Both "How to Save a Life" and the band's first single, "Over My Head (Cable Car)," received Grammy Award nominations. The Fray's debut studio album, also titled *How to Save a Life*, received quadruple platinum certification from the RIAA.
