The actor, who plays a fictional peasant in the drama about a historic rebellion against the crown, also called the ultra wealthy soul sick and in need of healing. His comments drew applause in the room, but online reaction has been far less forgiving. Critics, including reality television personality Spencer Pratt, pointed out that Garfield was reportedly paid around five million dollars to play OpenAI CEO Sam Altman in his upcoming film Artificial, backed in part by wealthy investors. Others accused the actor of pushing a political message dressed up as entertainment. Garfield has previously admitted his own discomfort with playing Altman, saying the role forced him to confront uncomfortable truths about power and privilege.
