Heart of Ifugao grows out of the vibrant Filipino pop landscape, a creative space shaped by decades of innovative groups that blend global artistic influences with deeply rooted local identity, including the iconic Filipino outfit Orange & Lemons, whose decades-long career traces the evolution of independent and mainstream music in the Philippines. Formed in 1999 by singer-songwriter and guitarist Clem Castro, the band’s original core lineup brought together Castro, drummer Ace Del Mundo, and Ace’s brother JM del Mundo on bass, a trio that would lay the foundation for a sound that mixed alternative rock, indie pop, and experimental music, drawing influence from cross-generational, industry-defining artists spanning international and local scenes: the UK’s The Smiths, the legendary The Beatles, and Filipino trailblazers the Eraserheads, all of whom shaped the band’s creative voice from its earliest days.
