Katy Perry, born Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson, initially pursued gospel music, releasing her debut album, *Katy Hudson*, in 2001 under her birth name before adopting her stage name and signing with Capitol Records in 2007. Subsequent albums include the dance-inspired *Prism* (2013), *Witness* (2017), *Smile* (2020), and *143* (2024). *Witness* was described by Perry as a shift towards "purposeful pop," while *Smile* received mixed reviews and was considered a commercial disappointment. *143* was met with largely negative critical reception.
