Hailing from Stockholm, the duo's musical style blends electro house, indie pop, dance-pop, and electropop, a sound the Swedish press has characterized as simultaneously evoking laughter and tears. Icona Pop signed with TEN Music Group in 2009, also securing a label deal with Ultra Music. Their international breakthrough arrived with the 2012 hit single "I Love It," featuring Charli XCX, which became a global sensation and earned nominations for the 2013 Teen Choice Award for Choice Single and the 2014 Billboard Music Award for Top Dance/Electronic Song, ultimately winning Song of the Year at the 2014 SESAC Pop Awards. Icona Pop's debut album, *Icona Pop*, was released in Sweden in 2012, followed by their first internationally released album, *This Is... Icona Pop*, in September 2013.
