Hector Moreno & Norberto Cepelli perform Brahms's "Hungarian Dances for Piano Four Hands," a collection of 21 pieces composed between 1869 and 1880. Originally conceived as light entertainment for piano four hands, these works became some of the most commercially successful of Brahms's career. The dances draw heavily on Hungarian folk music and Romani styles, particularly the csárdás, a tradition Brahms encountered during his travels and collaborations with Hungarian violinists. Rather than simple transcriptions, Brahms reimagined folk melodies and themes by other Hungarian composers, enriching them with lush harmonies, syncopated rhythms, and striking contrasts. Each short piece, typically one to five minutes, features a characteristic arc: a slow, melancholic opening that erupts into a frantic, dance-driven rhythm. The most famous, Nos. 1 and 5, transform memorable themes into bursts of rhythmic energy, capturing the festive spirit of Hungarian dance.
