The spread of R&B across the globe over the past seven decades has created a sprawling, diverse ecosystem of regional iterations, each rooted in the unique cultural context of its home nation while remaining connected to the core throughlines that have defined the genre since its emergence. Indonesia’s engagement with R&B began in the mid-20th century, as the genre’s rising global popularity reached the archipelago, and local creators began experimenting with its structures, weaving in their own longstanding creative traditions to build a distinctly Indonesian approach to R&B that would grow and evolve over generations. In the decades that followed, this foundational work expanded, as creators from across Indonesia’s thousands of inhabited islands, each home to distinct ethnic groups with their own musical histories, brought their unique perspectives to the genre, building a thriving national R&B scene that contributes constantly to the global evolution of the form.
