Katy Perry, born Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson, began her career in gospel music, releasing the album *Katy Hudson* in 2001, which was not commercially successful. After adopting the stage name Katy Perry, she signed with Capitol Records in 2007, and her breakthrough came with the 2008 pop-rock album *One of the Boys*, featuring the hit single "I Kissed a Girl." *One of the Boys* sold seven million copies worldwide. Her 2010 album, *Teenage Dream*, became the only album by a woman to produce five U.S. number-one singles, and its 2012 reissue, *The Complete Confection*, included another U.S. number-one single. Perry's 2013 dance-inspired album, *Prism*, yielded two U.S. number-one singles, "Roar" and "Dark Horse." Subsequent albums include *Witness* (2017), *Smile* (2020), and *143* (2024). *Witness* was described by Perry as a shift towards "purposeful pop," while *Smile* received mixed reviews and was considered a commercial disappointment. *143* was met with largely negative critical reception.
