The trio that would become one of the Philippines’ most prominent pop acts came together as Paul Yap, Carlos Tañada, and Ean Mayor, crafting work first under the name Up Dharma Down before adopting the shorthand UDD as their sound evolved to reach wider global audiences. Early in their career, the group built a reputation as a formidable live act, earning coveted opening slots for some of the most influential names in indie and alternative music, including Incubus, Bloc Party, The XX, Tegan and Sara, Cut Copy, Cigarettes After Sex, Tahiti 80, Hitomitoi, Ovall, and Yumi Zouma. These opening sets allowed the trio to hone their craft in front of diverse crowds, laying the groundwork for their own headline tours that would eventually take them across three continents, with performances spanning their home region of Asia, as well as Canada and the United States, bringing their distinctive electronic-inflected pop to fans far from their Manila base.
