About this Song
TJ Monterde, the Filipino creative force behind Mahika, approaches his craft with a commitment to autonomy that lets his work escape the rigid genre silos that often box artists into narrow creative lanes, a choice that is reflected in the classification of the sound, which rejects all standard genre markers to exist as a wholly individual piece of work. Mahika carries with it the weight of a cultural landscape rich with diverse musical traditions, spanning generations of creative expression that have merged, shifted, and evolved to fit the needs of the communities that nurture them, even as mainstream industry forces often seek to flatten that diversity into a small set of marketable categories that can be easily sold to domestic and global audiences.
