About this Song
Folk music as it has been nurtured across the thousands of islands that make up the Philippines is never merely a set of stylistic choices or a categorical label for a body of work, but a living, breathing lineage that carries the unbroken stories, values, and shared solidarities of the communities that tend to its traditions, passing them between generations, weaving them into the fabric of both ordinary weekday gatherings and landmark life events that bring entire neighborhoods and towns together. It is a form that grows from the soil of the archipelago, shaped by the specific rhythms of coastal harvests, highland farming cycles, and the quiet resilience of communities that have long turned to shared song to hold both grief and joy, to make space for mourning collective loss and to celebrate collective triumph, to turn individual hopes into a chorus that everyone can join.
