Across global popular music, hip-pop is often framed as a uniform, borderless sound, shaped primarily by the industry forces that push its most commercially visible iterations to audiences across every continent. But that framing erases the way that localized hip-pop scenes, rooted in specific national and cultural contexts, reimagine the form to speak to the unique experiences of the communities that create and engage with it, and the Philippines’ own hip-pop ecosystem is one of the most vibrant, layered sites of that reimagination, home to works that weave the formal and tonal throughlines of hip-pop with the unspoken cultural context that only a work created within the archipelago can carry.
