Born Regina Encarnacion Ansong Velasquez on April 22, 1970, in Tondo, Manila, her early vocal training regimen included her father immersing her neck-deep in the sea to build core strength, muscle development, and lung capacity. Velasquez's rise to prominence began with victories in the television talent show *Ang Bagong Kampeon* in 1984 and the Asia Pacific Singing Contest in 1989.
