The Philippines’ 1990s local music ecosystem, centered in the capital of Manila, nurtured a wave of homegrown rock and pop acts that redefined what local popular music could sound like, blending global sonic influences with distinctly Filipino storytelling and irreverent charm. The most enduring of these acts is Parokya Ni Edgar, a group that earned the unofficial title of the country’s reigning court jesters, writing witty pop-punk tracks that leaned into strange, often unexpected subject matter to win over audiences across both the mainstream and underground music divides. Formed by six students at Manila’s Ateneo High School, the group began performing under the name Comic Relief, cutting their creative teeth on parodies of well-known international songs that let them hone their knack for reworking familiar melodies to fit vivid, uniquely local lyrics.
