In the Philippines, Parokya Ni Edgar emerged as a prominent pop-punk band, known for their witty songwriting and often unusual subject matter. The band's origins trace back to Ateneo High School in Manila, where six students—vocalist Chito Miranda, backup singer and dancer Vinci Montaner, guitarists Darius Semana and Gab CheeKee, bassist Buwi Meneses, and drummer Dindin Moreno—formed the group. Initially named Comic Relief, their early performances focused on parodying popular songs. By 1994, they became a fixture at Club Dredd, a hub for alternative music in Manila, where their distinctive outfits and humorous stage presence quickly earned them a local following. Their talent caught the attention of Richard Tan, manager for Philippine punk bands the Youth and Teeth, who helped them secure a deal with Universal. Robert Javier of the Youth produced Parokya Ni Edgar's 1996 debut album, *KHANGKHUNGKHERRNitZ The Album*. This unusually titled record achieved platinum status within six months of its release.
