Six high school students from Manila’s Ateneo High School came together in the early 1990s to form a group originally called Comic Relief, a project focused on crafting sharp, playful parodies of hit songs that would eventually evolve into Parokya Ni Edgar, the Filipino pop act behind the track Namamasko Po, whose career balanced underground cult favor and mainstream superstardom across decades of work. First cutting their teeth performing parodies for their local community, the band rebranded and began building a name for themselves on Manila’s live circuit, landing regular sets at Club Dredd, the city’s iconic hub for alternative music, starting in 1994. Their oddball stage outfits and goofy, unapologetic stage antics quickly turned them into local fan favorites, drawing crowds that connected with their irreverent energy and refusal to lean into the serious posturing that defined much of the era’s alternative rock scene.
