Six students from Manila’s Ateneo High School first came together to make music, a partnership that would grow into one of the Philippines’ most defining pop acts, renowned for their witty, genre-bending output and unapologetically playful public persona. Originally known by the name Comic Relief, the group first cut their teeth performing parodies of well-known songs, leaning into a sense of humor and subversion that would anchor their entire discography. As they refined their sound and stage presence, they rebranded to Parokya Ni Edgar, or the Parish of Edgar, a name that leaned into the silly, approachable charm that would earn them the title of the country’s reigning court jesters, writing sharp pop-punk tracks centered on often strange, unexpected subject matter that set them apart from every other act on the local scene.
