Six Manila high school students meeting at Ateneo High School first gathered to make music under the name Comic Relief, cutting their teeth on parodies of well-known songs before rebranding to Parokya Ni Edgar, a name that translates to the Parish of Edgar, and cementing their status as the Philippines’ reigning court jesters of popular music. The core lineup of vocalist Chito Miranda, back-up singer and dancer Vinci Montaner, guitarists Darius Semana and Gab CheeKee, bassist Buwi Meneses, and drummer Dindin Moreno spent their early performing days honing their act, and in 1994, they began playing sets at Club Dredd, Manila’s legendary hotbed for alternative music, where their oddball outfits and relentless goofy stage antics quickly turned them into local fan favorites. It was not long before their draw caught the attention of industry figures, leading to Richard Tan, manager of beloved Filipino punk groups the Youth and Teeth, helping them land a recording contract with Universal.
