Six students at Manila’s Ateneo High School first joined forces to play music under the name Comic Relief, a project focused on performing spot-on parodies of widely known songs that laid the groundwork for the career of Parokya Ni Edgar, the Filipino group behind Chikinini, a pop recording hailing from the Philippines. From their earliest days playing small local shows, the group rebranded to carry the name Parokya Ni Edgar, translating to Parish of Edgar, a moniker that leaned into the wry, subversive sense of humor that would earn them the title of the Philippines’ reigning court jesters of pop-punk. Their lineup, solidified in those high school early days, featured vocalist Chito Miranda, back-up singer and dancer Vinci Montaner, guitarists Darius Semana and Gab CheeKee, bassist Buwi Meneses, and drummer Dindin Moreno, a group of collaborators that would stick together through decades of local and international acclaim.
