From the Philippines, the pop recording "Ang Parokya" features the band Parokya Ni Edgar, formed by six students at Ateneo High School in Manila. Vocalist Chito Miranda, back-up singer and dancer Vinci Montaner, guitarists Darius Semana and Gab CheeKee, bassist Buwi Meneses, and drummer Dindin Moreno originally called themselves Comic Relief, specializing in parodies of well-known songs. The group became local favorites at Club Dredd, a Manila alternative music venue, due to their oddball outfits and goofy stage antics. The band signed with Universal, and the Youth's Robert Javier produced their 1996 debut, *KHANGKHUNGKHERRNitZ The Album*, which went platinum in six months. The band's irreverent antics, such as taking melodies from groups like The Clash and Bob Dylan and fitting them with Tagalog lyrics, appealed to both mainstream audiences and underground followers.
