Rooted in Manila’s thriving local alternative circuit, the group behind this pop album cut their teeth performing parodies of well-known songs while still students at the city’s Ateneo High School, where they first came together as a six-piece act originally named Comic Relief. Long celebrated as the Philippines’ reigning court jesters of pop, the group writes witty, memorable songs centered on often strange, deeply specific subject matter, a sensibility that shaped every step of their rise from underground performers to national stars, and that defines the work collected on their album, Parokya Ni Edgar. After rebranding to the name that would define their career, they brought that unique voice to Manila’s iconic Club Dredd, the city’s hotbed for alternative music, where they began performing in 1994.
