Orange & Lemons first took shape in 1999, when singer-songwriter and guitarist Clem Castro set out to build a band that could merge the cross-generational sounds that shaped his own musical sensibilities, recruiting drummer Ace Del Mundo and the latter’s brother JM del Mundo on bass to round out the core trio. Mcoy Fundales joined shortly after the band’s formation as second vocalist, a role he would hold for the entirety of the group’s first active run, which stretched until 2007. From the start, the band’s work pulled from a wide range of well-respected acts spanning multiple eras and regions, drawing inspiration from British indie icons The Smiths and 1960s pop pioneers The Beatles, alongside fellow Filipino trailblazers the Eraserheads, for a sound that blended alternative rock, indie pop, and experimental flourishes that set them apart from their peers in the local scene.
