Clem Castro founded Orange & Lemons in 1999, bringing together a lineup of musicians that would shape the course of Filipino indie and alternative rock for nearly three decades. Rounding out the original trio were drummer Ace Del Mundo and his brother JM del Mundo, who held down bass duties from the group’s earliest shows and recording sessions, while Mcoy Fundales joined at the band’s formation as a second vocalist, remaining with the group through its initial run that concluded in 2007. From their first rehearsals to their biggest commercial and critical successes, the band wove together a tapestry of sounds that pulled from alternative rock, indie pop, and experimental music, drawing influence from landmark acts across generations that left an indelible mark on their creative identity: UK indie pioneers The Smiths, the timeless pop craft of The Beatles, and fellow Filipino trailblazers The Eraserheads, all of whom informed the nuance, texture, and emotional core of the band’s output.
