Founded in 1999, the Filipino group Orange & Lemons came together around a shared love of cross-genre, era-spanning guitar-driven music, assembled by core creator Clem Castro, who pulled in brothers Ace and JM del Mundo to fill out the band’s initial rhythm section on drums and bass, respectively. Mcoy Fundales joined shortly after the band’s formation as a second vocalist, a role he would hold through the group’s entire first active run, which concluded in 2007. From the start, the band’s sonic identity wove together three distinct but complementary lanes: alternative rock, indie pop, and experimental music, all shaped by the members’ deep admiration for a roster of influential acts from disparate generations and scenes, including UK indie pioneers The Smiths, the timeless pop craft of The Beatles, and Filipino rock trailblazers the Eraserheads.
