Clem Castro founded a group that would redefine local independent and mainstream Filipino rock and pop tastes when he brought together Ace Del Mundo and JM del Mundo, his drummer and bassist respectively, to form Orange & Lemons in 1999. From its inception, the band added a second vocalist, Mcoy Fundales, who would remain with the group through its first full run of activity, until the band wrapped that initial era in 2007. The group’s sound drew from a wide pool of cross-generational influences that spanned global and local icons, weaving together the jangly, lyrical sensitivity of The Smiths, the melodic craft that made The Beatles a permanent touchstone for musicians across every genre, and the sharp, relatable creativity of the Philippines’ own Eraserheads, to build a signature style that blended alternative rock, indie pop, and experimental music that felt both familiar to long-time fans of the bands that inspired them and entirely new to local audiences.
