About this Song
Filipino R&B occupies a singular space in global popular music, one that weaves together the longstanding transnational exchange of Black musical traditions with the centuries of layered, community-centered musical heritage that defines the Philippines’ vast archipelago of over 7,000 islands. Nariyan Ka, a sound rooted in this dynamic cultural landscape, sits within a long line of Filipino works that expand and reimagine what R&B can be, moving beyond monolithic understandings of the genre to center the specific cultural contexts that shape its creation and circulation across the world.
