About this Song
Transnational musical forms rarely stay static as they travel across borders, shifting and deepening as they root in new communities that bring their own longstanding creative traditions to bear on every note, every rhythmic choice, and every core idea that defines the form. Rock and roll, often misidentified as a uniquely North American cultural product, has been reimagined in nearly every region of the world, and few places have nurtured as vibrant, enduring, and creatively rich an iteration of the genre as the Philippines, where the form’s foundational energy of communal celebration and unfiltered creative autonomy aligned perfectly with cultural values that have long centered collective musical expression as a core part of daily life.
