Cross-cultural and intergenerational creative exchange across the Philippines’ vast, archipelagic landscape has long produced work that defies the rigid, often Western-centric genre labels that structure most global music ecosystems, work that refuses to be siphoned into narrow buckets that erase the nuance of how local creators weave inherited traditions, contemporary influences, and experimental impulses into something entirely new. Too often, creators working in Southeast Asia are forced to fit their work into pre-existing categories that cater to external expectations: framed as “traditional folk” for global world music audiences, or stripped of their distinct regional identity to fit the generic mold of mainstream pop that performs well across streaming algorithms, with little space for work that exists outside those limiting frames.
