Long before they joined forces to craft their joint full-length album, Adie and Janine Berdin built their individual artistic foundations within the rich, interconnected Philippine music scene, a space that has long nurtured R&B as a vehicle for intimate, resonant storytelling that speaks to both local lived experience and the genre’s global core. The Philippines’ R&B community draws from decades of cross-pollination between homegrown musical sensibilities and the genre’s transnational evolution, creating a landscape that allows creators to refine their voices while leaning into shared cultural touchstones that tie their work to audiences across the archipelago and beyond. For both Adie and Janine Berdin, the years leading up to their collaboration were spent honing the creative instincts that would shape every choice made during the development of Mahika, learning to balance the formal demands of R&B’s structural traditions with the unique perspective each brought to their joint work.
