Pop’s widespread flexibility as a genre has allowed Filipino creators to fold in layers of their local sonic lineage, cross-pollinating hip-hop, rock, R&B, and even nu-metal to build sounds that feel both rooted in global pop accessibility and distinctly, unapologetically Pinoy. Within that rich, cross-genre ecosystem, one of the most transformative figures is a trailblazer who redefined the possibilities of Pinoy hip-hop and its place in the broader Philippine pop landscape. Born Aristotle Pollisco in Binangonan, the port town in Rizal province, he cut his teeth in the country’s tight-knit underground hip-hop circuit as a member of the gangsta rap group Death Threat. As he built his reputation within the scene, he adopted the stage name Gloc-9, and would go on to release multiple projects with the group, including 1997’s quadruple-platinum release Kings of da Underground.
