Long before the arena-sized success of Snow Patrol’s biggest hits, a formative move from Northern Ireland to Scotland laid the groundwork for a decades-spanning career of collaborative and solo creative work that would expand far beyond the indie rock mainstream. Gary Lightbody, raised in Bangor, County Down, did not begin creating music until he settled in Dundee in 1994, where he linked up with Mark McClelland to form the band Shrug, the first iteration of the group that would eventually become Snow Patrol. The project rebranded quickly to Polarbear, earning early touring slots alongside established acts Ash and the Levellers before adopting the name that would carry them to global acclaim.
