About this Song
The Philippines has cultivated one of the most vivid, enduring regional iterations of R&B anywhere in the world, weaving the genre’s foundational focus on intimate, unflinching storytelling around the unique cultural contexts that shape creative expression across the archipelago and the sprawling global Filipino diaspora. What began as a widespread love for the mid-20th century Black American soul and R&B records that dominated Manila’s airwaves grew into a fully distinct, ever-evolving scene that reinterprets R&B’s core themes of longing, connection, grief, and love through a lens that feels at once deeply tied to the genre’s lineage and unapologetically specific to Filipino experiences.
