About This Album
Rooted in the expansive, decades-long lineage of hip-hop practice that has taken root and redefined itself across every island and urban center of the Philippines, the album Akala emerges not as a detached entry in a global genre, but as a specific, rooted iteration of the form’s core promise to turn interiority, context, and unspoken experience into something that resonates far beyond the small, intimate spaces that often spawn the most urgent creative work, carrying the weight of all that hip-hop has always allowed its creators to center, from the quiet frustrations of unmet longing to the loud, unapologetic assertion of identity that can’t be contained by the limitations others would place on the people who call this archipelago home.
