Indie folk duo A Firm Handshake formed in 2012. The duo operated out of Stillwater, Minnesota. Its two members were lifelong friends Zach Sobiech and Sammy Brown. Zach Sobiech received a diagnosis of osteosarcoma in 2009. He was 14 years old when doctors shared the news. Osteosarcoma is a rare form of bone cancer. Sobiech began writing songs only a short time after his diagnosis. He turned to songwriting as a way to come to terms with his illness. He also saw songwriting as a way to talk about his condition with his closest circle of friends and family. His music created a bridge between his experience and the people he loved, who struggled to grasp the scope of his diagnosis. One of the songs Sobiech wrote during this period was “Clouds”. The track and its accompanying YouTube video became an internet sensation. The viral spread of the video and song earned Sobiech worldwide attention. That attention extended to his full band, A Firm Handshake, bringing their work to audiences across the globe.
