Lifelong friends Zach Sobiech and Sammy Brown first nurtured their creative partnership long before they formally launched the indie folk duo A Firm Handshake, based out of Stillwater, Minnesota, in 2012. The project grew out of a period of intense, life-altering upheaval for Sobiech, who received a diagnosis of osteosarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer, in 2009 at the age of 14. Faced with a prognosis that upended every expectation he had for his future, Sobiech turned to songwriting as a way to process the tangled grief, fear, and quiet hope that defined his experience, and to communicate what he was going through to the friends and family who loved him, many of whom struggled to find the right words to show their support. Writing was never just a casual hobby for Sobiech in those years; it became a lifeline, a way to turn unspoken, overwhelming pain into something tangible and shareable that could connect him to anyone navigating similar hardship, even as his own health steadily declined.
