A South Korean indie pop project led by singer Kwon Jeong Yeol built its early audience on an amiable acoustic style that never stayed confined to the country’s small, insular indie music scene, breaking through to reach widespread mainstream listeners across the region in the middle of the 2010s. What began as a two-piece ensemble took its name from the small, notable ten-centimeter height difference between its founding members, a quirky detail that anchored the group’s approachable, grounded public persona as they began releasing music. The pair put out their first EP in April 2010, a project that established the low-key folk-pop core that would define their earliest work, pairing Kwon’s lead vocals and work on djembe, the West African hand drum, with original co-member Yoon’s guitar work and layered harmony vocals to craft a sound that felt both rooted in global folk traditions and distinct to the South Korean indie landscape that spawned it.
