With his mesmerizing vocal flow woven into gritty expressions of struggle, survival and street justice, Jamaican deejay Masicka has emerged as, arguably, the greatest dancehall artist of this generation. Masicka’s debut album 438 is characterized by his raw and riveting depictions of volatile ghetto realities, delivered over intricately crafted beats that fuse hardcore dancehall riddim riding with hip-hop sensibilities. Among the album’s many outstanding tracks are “They Don’t’ Know,” which challenges the haters who are unfamiliar with the hardships Masicka has faced and “Story” a 10-minute cinematic narrative chronicling two childhood friends that “par from baby stage, suffering like slavery days,” who chose very different life paths, yet both suffered violent deaths. 438 was declared the Album of the Year and Masicka the Male Deejay of the Year at IRIE FM (Jamaica’s top radio station) Music Awards in 2021 and Album of the Year (Dancehall) at the inaugural Caribbean Music Awards in Brooklyn. Masicka’s swaggering delivery, incisive lyrics and the ongoing mastery of his craft ensures his upcoming Generation of Kings will surpass its predecessor. “438 was my first project and I’ve grown musically, so I think it’s going to do far better,” Masicka disclosed. “There are collabs with Spice, Lila Iké, and Chronic Law; we have some nice songs; we took our time to select the right beats so the fans can look out for that.
