Ungu’s early career was defined by a deliberate balance of pop and rock sensibilities that anchored the band’s first major commercial breakthrough, a period of creative and lineup evolution that shaped the recording that would introduce their work to widespread audiences across Indonesia. During the production of the band’s album Laguku, the group navigated a shift in their core lineup, when original guitarist Ekky and keyboardist Gatz stepped away from the band not due to personal conflict between members, but over disagreements with their management team. Following their departures, the band solidified a new lineup consisting of vocalist Pasha, guitarist Enda, bassist Makki, and drummer Rowman, who carried the project across the finish line at Hijau Studio, the recording space owned by Anang Hermansyah, where all tracks for Laguku were tracked. Released on July 6, 2002, Laguku’s lead single, “Bayang Semu”, written by Ekky and Michael P.
