Each of the concertos that make up Antonio Vivaldi’s iconic Four Seasons cycle was paired with an original sonnet penned by the composer himself, a deliberate choice to tie written narrative to the sweeping, vivid soundscapes he crafted for strings. For the first movement of Winter, the sonnet that anchors the work is stark, visceral, and rooted in the raw physical discomfort of deep, unforgiving cold: lines that describe the sharp tremble of a body trapped in freezing snow, buffeted by a cruel, howling wind, feet stamping nonstop to generate what little warmth they can, teeth chattering uncontrollably as the chill seeps into every bone. Vivaldi didn’t limit these sensations to the page; he wove them directly into the structure of the music, turning the abstract experience of winter into something tangible, something that wraps around the listener and lets them feel the bite of the wind just as vividly as the sonnet’s speaker.
